Director: Michel Gondry
Starring: Jack Black, Mia Farrow, Danny Glover
Adopting the policy "you name it, we shoot it", VHS video store worker Mike (Mos Def) and his friend Jerry (Black) create homemade productions of their stores' movies in an effort to keep their one loyal customer, after Jerry, accidentally magnetised by a local power plant, destroys all of Mikes videos. Sounds slightly screwy? Of course! But Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) has a knack for stories seemingly from a child's imagination. Witty, clever (the home-made versions of famous films are hysterical) and with a strong sense of modern nostalgia for the VHS industry (and the non-corporate video store), Jerry and Mike soon become neighbourhood heroes. You don't get that kind of service at Blockbuster! (AB)
