District 9 [MA 15+]
Director: Neill Blomkamp Starring: Sharlto Copley, Jason Cope, Robert Hobbs Sci-fi fantasy – Based on the director's own short film, Alive in Joburg, District 9 is damn' near perfect (one of few films to average 90% on Rotten Tomatoes – the online site that archives film reviews). District 9 is about aliens, but it might as well be a mirror for our fears of people we don't understand. For almost 30 years extra–terrestrial refugees have been confined to hellish camps in South Africa. Our treatment is naturally humane; confine, contain and don't let them leave. World leaders continue to bicker about what to do with them (they are still waiting to see if the alien's arrival will herald an attack or advanced technology we could steal) and their containment becomes privatised by heartless organisations for profit. Tensions between the ETs and humans rise when a government official contracts an alien virus that may unlock the secret to their advanced weapon technology. Filmed in a photo–journalistic style and authentically real–world in appearance (not unlike Children of Men), this is one hell of debut for director Blomkamp and one of the best movies of the year. Produced in New Zealand by Peter Jackson. (AB)
