The turbulence of revolutionary Russia is overwhelming and the performances, notably of Julie Christie, are unforgettable. There are layers, plotlines, characters and themes, reminiscent of traditional Russian greats, Tolstoy and Chekov. But this is a Hollywood epic with a star-studded cast. The story centres on Yuri Zhivago, a doctor with a penchant for poetry who, although married, falls in love with another woman amidst the turmoil of the Russian revolution. The spectacle of it is magnificent. Lyrical score by Maurice Jarre and breathtaking cinematography by Freddie Young. Winner of five Oscars. With Rod Steiger, Alec Guiness, Ralph Richardson, Tom Courtenay. Fully-restored Pavavision print now with DTS Digital Sound. (TMc)
