Japanese animation — the film is the first in a planned production of four films that re–imagine the 90s series Neon Genesis Evangelion. One of the most remarkable things about this movie is how easily the episodes translate into the arch of a feature–length film. Despite that, the movie is as much if not more so for viewers who have never seen the series. The movie refines certain points left unclear in the original show.

It's set in a post–apocalyptic world and concerns an emotionally–troubled fourteen–year–old boy named Shinji Ikari, who is called to the futuristic and advanced city of Tokyo–3 by his distanced father, who orders him to pilot a giant, bio–mechanical being known as an Evangelion in order to defeat the invading and hostile giants known only as the Angels.
