Based on Joseph Stein's hit play, which in turn was based on the Sholem Aleichem stories about Topol, a humble man from a small village, who is trying to preserve the Jewish heritage, as well as marry off all his daughters.
Great location filming won an Oscar for cinematographer Oswald Morris, as did the rousing score, which got John Williams his Oscar. Recently a hit play in Melbourne.
