HOWL'S MOVING CASTLE still - select for larger image Miyazaki follows up the highly–successful Princess Mononoke and his Oscar-winning Spirited Away with another extraordinary tale. His films are rich in character development and mythology. And Howl's is no exception.

Cursed to live in an old woman's body, a young girl flees to the hills to find a mystical, moving castle that roams the land. Like its previous films, Studio Ghibli fills Howl's Moving Castle with unforgettable characters and a wondrous sense of imagination.

Hayao Miyazaki was awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice International Film Festival — the first time this honour has been given to a director of animated films.

The award was presented to the director on Friday, September 9, 2005, during the course of “Miyazaki Day” which saw the screening of three of his films that were relatively unknown in Italy and Europe.

In announcing the award, Marco Mueller, Venice Film Festival director, declared, “Miyazaki's energy combines romanticism and humanism with an epic take on story–telling, a touch of visionary fantasy which leaves one open–mouthed. The sense of wonder his films convey awakens the child who sleeps within each of us.”
