The always-surprising Ryan Gosling is Lars Lindstrom. Extremely shy, but well liked, Lars purchases a life-like sex doll on-line and begins to introduce her to his family as his girlfriend. It is discovered the doll is actually a vehicle for which Lars is working through some very deep and personal problems, prompting his family and friends, and eventually his whole hometown, to accept the doll as a real person (she even gets a job). Another one of those smart, funny and heartfelt little movies like Juno and Little Miss Sunshine that has very-well-developed characters and leaves you with a very satisfying movie experience. (AB)
