Who knew Richard Roxburgh was such a brilliant director! This effective and moving story of new Australia 1961 is possibly the other great film of the year so far. With astonishing performances by Eric Bana and newcomer Kody Smit-McPhee, Romulus My Father is a faithful adaptation of Raimond Gaita's acclaimed book. This is a great film, truly great in the literal, emotional sense. It is the best treatment of the migrant and child experience since Silver City and Careful He Might Hear You. We have waited 25 years for this and it is a superb success. Well worth the time and the night out. (PB)
