Tim Burton's new gothic fantasy, based on the Broadway musical (music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim), runs red with vast quantities of blood and song. Wrongly sent into exile, Benjamin Barker (Depp) returns to 19th century London, finding his wife dead and daughter owned by the cruel Judge Turpin (a subtly diabolical Alan Rickman). To extract his bloody revenge he opens a barbershop offering the closest shave in town (see where it's heading) with his twisted tenant Mrs. Lovett. Told almost entirely through song, it's devilish, brutal and filled with Burton's cinematic visual signatures. (AB)
