The powerful biography of China's last emperor, Pu Yi. This beautiful film presents the transformation of one man and one country from monarchy to communism during the full expanse of the twentieth century. Told in an intricate flashback/flash–forward narrative.

China was one of the few civilised countries still under monarchial rule. Three–year–old Pu Yi is to be imprisoned as emperor in the Forbidden City. The only “man” within the walls of the Forbidden City, the young emperor is surrounded by hundreds of eunuchs — a devoted but corrupt group of servants.

Visually stunning, colourful with superb sets and production design.

Nine “Oscars” including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Cinematography.
