Director: Luchino Visconti
Starring: Burt Lancaster, Claudia Cardinale
Burt Lancaster plays the lead in this film set in the 1860s during the years of the making of modern Italy - the emergence of the bourgeoisie at the expense of the landed aristocracy. Visconti's glorious take on the last dying breath of the Italian aristocracy is as ambiguous about their demise as the film's patriarch, Prince Salina (played with wonderful poise by Burt Lancaster). The Leopard is based on Giuseppe Di Lampedusa's novel and is shown here in a glorious restored version without the terrible dubbing it received upon its initial release. (SE)
