A group of aging outlaws find they are no longer "viable" in 1913 and decide on one last act of violence before retiring. Peckinpah's casting is brilliantly unromantic, yet compassionate, giving the Western a new possibility: maybe the cowboys were just sad, unfulfilled and directionless men with guns at their sides - something that Tarantino managed to inappropriately groove-ify in his films.
