The Astor Theatre WWW SiteThe entire, four–monthly, Astor calendar will usually be on–line at the same time that each printed version is produced although it will probably be a few days after that until all the mini–reviews (as found on the back of the printed calendar) are available. All of the listings for the current calendar — even those for past weeks — will remain on–line (apart from anything else, we started getting complaints when we removed them on a week–by–week basis). You will find details of any late changes (such as corrections, extra matinees and so on) under late changes and other announcements of interest under news. Long–time users of this site will know that it was designed from the outset (more than ten years ago) for fast loading. We believed that Astor patrons wanted to access information about films and session–times and did not want to put up with delays while large and complex graphics (not to mention advertisements) were downloaded. However, the growth in the number of faster 'net connections made it possible to add a few things — including the use of frames. But a no–frames version will be loaded automatically for non–frames–capable browsers. Cascading style sheets (CSS) are used but there are default settings with no loss of functionality if CSS capability is limited, disabled or otherwise absent. ActiveX controls and cross–site scripting (XSS) are not used and JavaScript is used only in non–critical areas. And there are no pop–ups!
We do not use any browser–specific code except to cater for browsers that deviate from the HTML standard. You will not be forced to download a specific version of a particular browser — or a plug–in — to read what is on a normal page! (This may not be true, of course, for external sites accessed via links on these pages and local exceptions are trailers, music feeds and down–loadable PDFs of the calendar.)
